flamin’ hot πŸ”₯

I apologize in advance… this poem is so absurd…

She soars up the steep carpet flight into the sanctuary,
sluggish as a sloth. Settles lazily
the craving for crunch eating away at her;
the bright red bag crinkles loudly.

Because her hunger for chip has become so intense
she rips the bag open and sighs;
a strong gust of air flies out of the bag
spraying the scent of heat into her face.

She is prepared. Her phalanges navigate
the thin foil walls and snatch the perfect foodstuff;
her eyes sparkle at the sight of the red circle, she examines
the specimen and delicately places it in her mouth.

Her tongue pulses as the intense crimson flavor spreads.
The fried round dissolves,
yet still maintains its lovely flavor and structure;
the essence continues to grow

Scarlet dances around the chops, nearing the void
her sight becomes black as her lids close
savoring the last bit of seasoning.
It slides down into the abyss.

Then, in an instant, wings sprout out of her back,
eyes turn red, claws grow, nose and mouth replaced with maw,
smooth and pale becomes scaly and orange.
She transforms.

A ferocious beast sits in her place,
her orbs hold a dragonish glare, she has a slowness and grace;
her chest holds a hearth of burning fire where her heart lays.
Scales gleam in the sunlight, her pride and delight apparent.

She perches on top of her couch, preparing for flight.
Her massive feet propel the colossal creature into the air;
smashing through the roof she makes her escape,
flamin’ hot lays chip bag still in hand.

Speaker: A narrator/ viewer of the girl
Audience: Anyone who’s eaten Flamin’ Hot Lays Potato Chips
Situation: A girl is eating Flamin’ Hot Lays Potato Chips and then something absurd occurs.
Shift: Stanza 6, when the girl transforms into a dragon…
Tone: Excited/Enthusiastic/Slightly aggressive
Mood: Intrigued/Confused…

Thesis: Although the poem “Flamin’ Hot πŸ”₯” by Peyton Leyendecker seems to be an absurd narration about how a girl transforms into a dragon after eating Flamin’ Hot Lays, it is actually a metaphor describing the intense feelings one experiences when eating their favorite snack.

  1. I’ve honestly never had Flamin’ Hot Lays Potato Chips, but I do love eating spicy foods. I think your shift perfectly captures the experience of food with complex flavors. It feels amazing, but overpowering at the same time and I could tell your poem was written with a lot of passion. Great poem!
